3.9.11 The Suicide Provision
The suicide clause was designed to protect the insurance carrier. The suicide clause typically stipulates a two-year period of time in which the policy's death benefit will not be paid if the insured commits suicide; only a refund of the premiums paid will be issued to the beneficiary. The clause prohibits any individual from purchasing a life insurance policy with the sole intent of committing suicide.
