11.1.1 Medical Expense Insurance
Simple basic concept: Medical expense insurance coverage provides insurance to protect individuals from incurring the full expenses of medical treatment. Most of the time, there is a deductible (a stated initial dollar amount) the insured must pay before benefits kick in, but it depends upon the plan.
Some plans require a deductible for everything (up to a specified limit) except prescription drugs, which are paid for on a share-the-cost basis (copay).
Medical insurance can provide coverage in many different ways and in many combinations.
- Hospital care
- Surgical expenses
- Physician expenses
- Medical treatment programs
- Outpatient care
- Medicare supplement
- Long-term care
