11.1.3 Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance is considered the purist form of accident insurance AD&D insurance provides payment if the insured's death results from an accident, if the injured accidentally severs a limb above the wrist or ankle joints, or totally and irreversibly loses eyesight. This type of insurance is typically sold through group insurance plans.

Most employer-sponsored health insurance plans also carry an optional AD&D benefit. Should a person die from an accident or become dismembered as a result of an accident, a predesignated amount is payable.
