14.4 Policy Exclusions
Following are some typical disability income policy exclusions.
- Disabilities that occur before the effective date of coverage
- Disabilities that result from a normal pregnancy
- Disabilities that occur within six months of the effective date of the insurance (elimination period)
- Normal pregnancy and childbirth (however, complications of pregnancy are NOT excluded)
- War (declared or undeclared)
- Any act or hazard of war
- Injuries incurred while in the armed services
- Eligibility for Workers' Compensation or Occupational Diseases Law
- Participation in an act of felony
- The use of drugs which were not prescribed by a physician for the insured's use
- Incarceration
- Preexisting condition restrictions
- Intentionally self-inflicted injury
- Most policies carry restrictions on mental disorders
