1.6 Government Insurers

All of the insurers mentioned previously are private insurers. Federal and state government insurance programs are commonly known as social insurance programs. All of the following are government insurance programs, though each has its own criterion for benefits. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid programs will be addressed in detail later in this course.

GOVERNMENT INSURERS CRITERION

Social Security (OASDI)

Social Security Hospital Insurance (HI)

Dependent payments are life insurance

Disability coverage

Supplemental Medical Insurance (SMI)

(commonly known as Medicare)

Age over 65

Disabled eligible for Social Security benefits

End-stage renal disease

Medicaid Poor, indigent, disabled children, renal stage disease
U.S. Armed Services and Veterans

Service members' Group Life

Veterans' Group Life

National Service Life
