1.7 Distribution Systems

All insurance companies doing business within Florida must be licensed (or certified, admitted, authorized, etc.). Most insurance policies are sold through individual agents, also referred to as producers, from presentation to delivery. Producers can be agents or brokers. By law, the agent represents the principal (the insurer).

Agents, like companies, must also be licensed in their particular insurance product line.

Once properly licensed, a producer's license remains continuous as long as the license is not suspended or revoked by the Department of Insurance, and the producer does not allow four years to elapse without being appointed for each class of insurance listed on the license. Agents must adhere to the state's continuing education (CE) requirements.*

*(Continuing education requirements can be found on page 24, Insurance Producers, of the Florida study manual and will be studied in Lesson 20 of the online course.)
