1.7.2 Solicitors, Consultants, and Special Agents
Then we've got solicitors, consultants (independent advisors), and special agents who are also involved in the system.
- Solicitors (such as telemarketers) usually perform the first contact with prospective customers - commonly known as cold calling.
- Consultants are usually licensed and specialize in insurance sharing plans, providing independent advice.
- Special agents are not usually licensed as they don't actually sell insurance; they assist insurance companies as field representatives.
Agents receive compensation through the payment of commissions, which are a certain percentage of the initial (first year) and subsequent (renewal) premiums. No life or health insurance may be issued for delivery in Florida unless the application is taken by, and the policy delivered through, a licensed agent who will receive the usual and customary commission.
